News Break: How to Manage Bankroll and Win Over the House in Blackjack

Wednesday, July 15th, 2009

Also known as Twenty-one, Blackjack is by far the most played casino game all over the world.  Nowadays, this game is not only played at the kidney-shaped table of the casino but it can now be played right at the comforts of your own home online.  This game is very popular because, it’s not just all play.  It is a strategic game that requires a lot of thinking and counting.  Some greenhorns at this game think that by getting to twenty-one is already enough to beat the dealer of the house.  WRONG! It’s not that simple.  Again, Blackjack is a game that requires strategic analytical thinking skills like card counting, doubling down and or splitting.  So, how can one win at this tricky game?

Firstly, you must know that Blackjack is basically a two-player game, although many can join and play a single round of this game.  Remember that in blackjack, no matter how many players are there, your main opponent is the dealer of the game.  Forget about the other players, because it’s not like poker where you play against the players.

Secondly, make it a point to accrue total grand points higher than that of the dealer.  This is done by calculating the value of your cards.  Knowledge of the value of the cards that you’re holding is vital in wining the game blackjack.  The value of the cards ranging from 2 to 10 has the same value as what is shown on the face of the card itself.  While the Face Cards Jack, Queen and King are worth 10 points each.  Depending on the player’s choice, the Ace card could either be worth 1 or 11 points.  You goal here is to avoid ‘busting’ or going over 21.

Another is to manage your bank money wisely.  Bet only with as little as 1% of your funds. When betting at the game of blackjack, you need to decide how much you can afford to lose.  Never go for the ‘Hunting Losses’ technique where in you try winning back the money you’ve lost on the first round by doubling your bet on the second round.  Blackjack is not just a mere game of probability.  The strategy here is to take advantage by betting higher when you are winning and to bet lower when you are losing.

Blackjack is a game that requires attention to details especially when you are counting your cards or estimating the true count.  Never play the game when you think you’re having a hard time focusing and not mentally vigilant as this will only lower down your chances of winning.

The key to win is to through discipline.  Know your limitations.  If you think you are unlucky at the moment, better quit the game as early as possible before you loose more money.

If you are really looking forward to winning at this game, you need to master sharpen your blackjack skills by practicing some more.  Read some blackjack books and learn the strategies of counting.

Government Intervention Yet Again: Online Poker Player Funds Frozen

Friday, July 10th, 2009

Online gambling sites have been under fire in the last few years.  It has even gotten to the point to where 11 states have declared it illegal to gamble on these sites if you reside in one of those states.  The laws made it so that banks could not allow you to wire your funds out of your account for betting.  Now, it seems, the government is taking even more control.

On June 4th the government decided to freeze a total of $19 million dollars in the banks located in Scottsdale, Arizona and Los Angeles, California.  This money belonged to online poker players.  A warrant was issued in San Francisco at a Wells Fargo branch, and a prosecutor ordered an Arizona bank to immediately freeze the funds of an account holder.  In both situations, the banks obliged.   Since that time, 24,000 online poker players have been victimized by the government, with a total of over $30 million in frozen funds.

Representatives from the federal prosecutor’s office have been questioned and the Associated Press reported that the reason given for the federal seizures was that the people involved were either involved in illegal gambling or that there was evidence that money laundering activities were taking place.  The problem is that the funds that have been frozen belong to individual people that have not committed any crimes.  The general consensus is that if the government is suspecting online gambling websites of these illegal activities, their funds should be frozen and they should be punished – not the taxpayers who are doing nothing wrong.

The Poker Players Alliance (PPA) is a major lobbying group for the United States.  Their main purpose is to ensure that online poker playing citizen’s are not being victimized for acting within the confines of the law.  In an interview with Poker News Daily, a spokesperson from the PPA stated that the US government is claiming violations of the Wire Act of 1961 and the Illegal Gambling Business Act.

One of the biggest issues is that these actions from the federal prosecutor’s office in the Southern District of New York had no legal right to claim the allegations that were made, nor freeze the $30 million.  According to the PPA, the charges may not hold up in a federal court, if the formal charges are ever made, because the Wire Act was designed to deal with online sports betting.  Additionally, there are no laws in the State of New York against betting, let alone online poker betting.

An attorney for one of the payment processors for online gambling sites believes that these actions are in some way related to the World Series of Poker tournaments that started in late May.  It seems like a huge coincidence to many members of the online poker world, who are seriously reacting to this violation.  In any event, most of the online poker websites and their payment processors have reimbursed players who received bounced checks, and some are including bonus amounts to help repair the damage that has been caused.  As for the actions of the government, it seems that it is not happy with the levels of control that it has recently acquired of major companies like General Motors, so it appears to many people that this is just another way to make us all follow the same straight line.

News on Gambling Expansion

Friday, July 10th, 2009

Gambling fanatics residing near the Hollywood Slots Hotel are anticipating the success of the appeal of Penn National Gaming, the parent company to which the Hollywood Slots Hotel, as well as Raceway, belongs under, to the state government with regards to offering table games such as poker and blackjack as a promotional offering to celebrate their first year after the hotel’s move to the new facility.  Hollywood Slots moved out of its temporary location at the Millers Restaurant and into 500 Main Street back on the 1st of July, which the latter now houses at least 1000 slot machines.

It was only last Wednesday that the Hollywood Slots Hotel reached its first year anniversary after moving into the new facility at 500 Main Street.  According to Hollywood Slots general manager Jon Johnson, as a way to celebrate their first successful year at the new facility, he is opening up plans to expand their gambling offerings through additional table games such as poker and blackjack.  This not only allows them to expand financially but also to become more competitive with rival casinos such as those in Connecticut and other gambling states.  Quoting from Johnson himself, “…and in order to compete with Connecticut those are the amenities that we’re going to have to offer.”

Although this is big news both for employees of the Hollywood Slots Hotel and players of poker and blackjack, none of this is going to become a reality until the state law to permit expansion through additional table games has been passed.  What’s more, there have been reports on several oppositions to the hotel’s plans for expansion.  Dennis Bailey of the Casinos No group says he and the members of his group will stop at nothing to halt any attempt of gambling expansion, while Governor Baldacci made it clear his opposition to the idea of gambling expansion.

While the Hollywood Slots Hotel continues on their plans for expansion, in Delaware a three-person panel under the Markell administration sought the help of a legal and expert consultant to assist them with drafting the rules and regulations for table games.  This not only means having to spend time searching for a competent consultant but will also push back the arranged opening date of Delaware’s Las Vegas-style games in its three racetrack casinos such as poker, blackjack, and roulette.  Quoting from chief of staff Tom McGonigle last Tuesday, “But we need to be realistic and need to do this right, and if it takes more time that’s what it’s going to be.”  Tom McGonigle is chief of staff to Governor Jack Markell.  The General Assembly required the panel to issue a report by July 28, which is a month before the consultant can be hired.

It was only last Monday when the Delaware Lottery Office sent out requests or proposals on table game consulting services to firms and businesses of about a dozen in number.  Applications to these proposals, according to Lottery Director Wayne Lemons, are due on the 10th of August and the said three-person panel will be reviewing them and will issue a recommendation to him on the 24th of August.

New Blackjack Publications

Most people have seen the movie “21” that deals with the world of casinos and blackjack.  In this 2008 movie six MIT students are taught by a professor to count cards in order to win money.  This keeps the professor rolling in dough and pays the students’ way through school.  The movie delves into the glamour of the Las Vegas casinos and into the dangerous business of trying to beat the dealer.

The history of this common casino game starts in France in the 17th century with a game called Vingt En Un or 21.  After the French Revolution the game came to America and became quite popular as there were no laws concerning gambling at that time and didn’t pop up until the beginning of the 19th century.  That is when the game went underground and once Nevada legalized gambling in 1931 it was one of the most popular games played in Las Vegas.  During the 1950’s a study was done and strategies were quickly developed.  Going further into the 1990’s Ken Uston published a book “Million Dollar Blackjack” where he expounded on computer technologies and a small group started using small computers hidden inside their shoes.

Blackjack has come down from the ages and there are forever new and improved publications on how to beat the odds and win millions.

Should U.S. Cities Have the Authority to Reject Casinos?

Friday, July 10th, 2009

As of today, residents of Gilroy won’t be able to have a taste of blackjack as the City Council rejects its earlier appeal to allow the city’s only casino, the Garlic City Club, to host blackjack games, which happened on the 6th of July 2009.  The club is located on the angle of Monterey and Seventh streets and is the only casino located in the city of Gilroy.  The Garlic City Club has passed on their appeal to hold the No Bust 21st Century Blackjack, and have almost won the Council’s vote with 6-0, until they unveiled the shocking truth and discovered that they could have dishonored a 15 year old city law that forbids these so-called gambling games.  Since the nature and game play of No Bust 21st Century Blackjack allows players to act as banker in the game at every rotation, it is classified under that category.  Upon realizing this, Councilperson Dion Bracco called to reinstate this particular subject in front of the council, saying that the matter must be brought back to the Council because of the misunderstanding.

This type of Blackjack entails that every player to operate as the banker in the game on a revolving basis.  Prior to each hand, one of the players is required to put down a certain quantity of funds in order to cover the round’s actions.  After doing so, he then plays through the dealer’s hand.  This is in contrast to ordinary poker games where players can only gamble against one another or maintain their own hands.

On a lighter note, the Downstream Casino Resort in Joplin was seen to have made an impact of $107 million since its first year on the area economy.  The casino resort opened for business last year on the 22nd of November and has been the economic stimulus of the city, as stated by Downstream Casino spokesman Sean Harrison.  He reported that the $107 million impact was composed of payments to area vendors worth $77.5 million as well as payroll and benefits that have totaled up to $29 million.

Likewise, the state of Oklahoma also received revenues from other casinos such as the Quapaw Casino, totaling up to $4.5 million in revenue during the recently ended fiscal year, according to the Office of State Finance.

Interestingly enough, the Downstream Casino started with only 1,250 employees and has since then never had problems or considerations of layoffs since the business has been good.  One of the employees that was featured in local newspapers and magazines was music teacher/card dealer Fran Wallain, who said, “I don’t want a sad job.  I don’t want a hard job.  I want a fun job.”  She had been employed in Downstream since the first day after being called for an invitation to go into dealer school, and has since then been going to classes while teaching music lessons at Carthage Junior High School in Joplin.  Eventually she retired after 23 years working as a music teacher and continued on her second career as a card dealer at Downstream.  She also comments on how her current position paid well and that it was the “fun job” she was looking for.

Reinventing New Ways to Play Blackjack – Diversifying the Multi-Player Software

Friday, July 10th, 2009

It considers different arenas such as single play, heads-up or multi-level tournaments. This can provide the diversity the game needs. Comparing this idea to the traditional way the game is played, it has a mixture of advantages and disadvantages for the player. Though this idea may vary according to the inclination of a particular player, it indeed must be taken into consideration by game developers for future changes n the game. By doing this, it can help provide new avenues for enjoying the variety of the game.

In the end, the possibilities are endless in the way the game is played. Many scenarios and considerations to consider that can make playing the game highly addictive.
